Ghana in her history has chalked a number of “firsts” in her history since she was “born” in the year 1957 and still counting.

Ghana is the first country sub Saharan Africa to gain independence from her colonial “masters” it is also the first country in the world to sign and ratify the convention of the rights of the child.

However, for the purpose of this article we will stay domestic and celebrate yet another feat by expecting Ghana’s first female vice president, a country that is predominantly run by the male population.

The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 polls, John Dramani Mahama settled on Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as running mate and has won that election to see to the affairs of the country for the next four years, partnering Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as his vice.

Mahama chose Prof. Opoku-Agyemang in the previous election in which the NDC missed out but have been given the nod, we would want to find out who the incoming vice president of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is.

Born on the 22nd of November, 1951 in Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana Prof. Opoku-Agyemang attended Anglican Girls’ Secondary School in Koforidua and the Wesley Girls’ Secondary School in Cape Coast.

She earned a B. Ed. in English and French at the University of Cape Coast, obtaining a masters and doctorate at the York University, Ontario Canada.

She also holds a Diploma in Advanced Studies in French from the University of Dakar, Senegal.

Several publications can be attributed to her, especially in academia.

She is a Christian, Methodist by denomination and has three children, a lady and two gentlemen and has had most of her working life at the University of Cape Coast where she held several positions.

Some of the positions she has held include Head Of Department of English, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Warden, Adehyd Hall and Valco Trust.

The icing on the cake is, she was not only appointed the first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, she is the first female to be appointed to a state public university in Ghana as Vice Chancellor.

She has other chips on her shoulder featuring as one of five scholarly speakers during the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery, Ghana’s representative on the Executive board of UNESCO and the Academic Director of the School for International Training in History and Cultures of the African Diaspora, among others.

After serving as Vice Chancellor at University of Cape Coast, then President Mahama appointed Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as Education Minister where policies and projects such as the Community Day Secondary Schools were constructed.

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is now headed for the second most high position in Ghana as the first female, she joins her peers, Fatoumata Jallow Tambajang of the Gambia, Samia Suluhu of Tanzania and Inonge Mutukwa Wina of Zambia.

“Jirapa FM” wishes Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang well and is relying on her not just to use her rich experience, but the mother figure that she is in the office of Veep. Congratulations.
