In a proactive bid to fortify the Northern sector’s media landscape against misinformation, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) recently hosted a comprehensive training session for media managers, show hosts, producers, and policy influencers.
The workshop, held in Tamale on the 18th of November, 2024, brought together over 20 participants from the five Northern regions of Ghana, equipping them with cutting-edge skills to identify, counter, and prevent the spread of false information.
Kojo Impraim, Program Director for MFWAM, disclosed that disinformation poses a significant threat to democracy and public trust. emphasized that the Foundation is committed to empowering media professionals to combat this menace going into the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The training covered: Fact-checking methodologies, Social media verification technique, Critical thinking in news gathering, Collaborative approaches to combating disinformation.
Renowned expert, Mr. Benjamin Alexander Davis and chairman of the Department of Multimedia Journalism, School of Global Journalism and communication, Morgan State University in the United States of America facilitated interactive sessions to enhance participants’ skills.
After the day’s training, participants expressed their gratitude to MFWA, indicating that the training has broadened their understanding of misinformation.
By building capacity among media professionals, MFWA aims to enhance fact-checking protocols, foster media literacy and promote regional collaborations.
This initiative is part of MFWA’s ongoing efforts to promote media excellence, freedom, and responsibility in West Africa.
