In a bid improve safety on the Volta Lake, the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has deployed a search and rescue vessel, “Martey Korley” to Kpando Torkor.
The vessel which was previously operating in Tema has been relocated and launched at Akosombo where she sailed to Kpando Tokor in the Volta Region of Ghana.
The Director-General of the GMA, Captain (GN) Rtd. Dr Kamal-Deen Ali stated that it is a “key part of a broader strategy to improve safety and strategically position the Authority to support the vision the 24 Hour Economy.” and is the first of its kind in the country.
The vessel has the capacity to rescue up to 150 people at a time.
The vessel christened the “Matey Koley” currently docked at Kpando Torkor, will provide a vital safety net for the many communities and travelers who rely on the Volta Lake for transport and livelihood.
Dr. Ali assured that the GMA remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding lives and promoting maritime safety in Ghana’s inland waters.
