Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BAHASS FOUNDATION, operators of BAHASS mental home the only one of its kind in the northern and middle belt of Ghana, Eliasu Baba Yusif, has decried the lack of mental health facilities up northern Ghana.
BAHASS MENTAL HOME, located in the Upper West Regional capital of Ghana, Wa, has since it’s operation over two years ago has taken care of more than 500 inmates with varied mental health conditions and is currently housing about 50 inmates in a rented facility.
The home provides residential, feeding, hygiene and health care for its inmates and a doctor, two nursing officers and four caretakers who take care of their several needs.
Eliasu Baba Yussif is a young philanthropist, footballer and businessman who was initially interested in operating an orphanage but changed directions when he got to know the gravity of the lack of mental health facilities especially up north.
The facility is being funded by his personal resources, contribution from well wishers and technical support from the Ghana Health Service where rent, medication, feeding and other essential needs are taken care of.
In Ghana, there are only three dedicated mental health institutions namely; The Ankaful, Pantang and Accra Psychiatric hospital all which are located in the southern part of the country.
The BAHASS foundation has started building a psychiatric home of its own as their current facility is on a rented premises and are leaving no stone unturned to complete the project.
The CEO is using this opportunity to thank all who have supported its course and is appealing to organisations and the general public to support them because mental sickness is like any other disease and is not immune to any individual.
